But that year China′s leader, Mao Ze-dong, launched the Cultural Revolution, and everything changed. Over the next few years Ji-li and her family were humiliated and scorned by former friends, neighbors, and co-workers. They lived in constant terror of arrest. Ji-li Jiang's THE RED SCARF GIRL is surprisingly one of the best books i have read this year. Since i found out that i have Chinese relatives from my mother's side (I am African American by the way), I have been much more interested in the Chinese culture. And ironically, i also found out that those Chinese relatives of mine lived through this chaotic time in China. I am far from truly knowing about these relatives (i don't even know what they look like), let alone do I know that much about the Chinese culture other than its history from the Shang Dynasty and Han Dynasty. But i feel that Ji-li Jang has revealed more about the Cultural Revolution than any history book on this subject, which very few people in the West know about. She also evinces such a moving narrative that's simple, and truly affective. People of all ages can understand the whole idea of the Cultural Revolution and the deaths and turmoil that happened upon innocent people, and innocent children. While reading this book, i felt as if i were in the author's shoes. I was nearly in tears as she battled upon the complications of truly wanting to be a Red Guard and take part in the revolution for Chairman Mao, and be against her family and denounce them as the enemy; or to be the enemy for simply doing the right thing. Esp. the scenes when her friends turned against her, of a relative of her friend killed herself, and of many other innocent people being humilated, and their privacy being infringed by the Red Guards, was truly haunting. I believe what makes this book so inspirational is how it doesn't only reflect one country, but all countries and people that lived in a time when power was manipulated, and people being brainwashed and losing their childhood and their past, and sometimes future, forever. I believe this book should be read in schools. It could be read in a social studies class, world history class, or an English class. I believe every student can get something out of this, such as a cultural awareness or historical awareness in this chapter of history, and to the last page get something out of it. This surely won't be the last time i will read this book. Highly recommend it.

This is NOT a book about the "big picture" of what happened in Communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Rather, it is a memoir of the lives of a young girl and her family and her friends' families. For the Chinese people, society's rules about what is good and bad were reversed, first when the Communists conquered China in 1949, and then the reversal was emphasized seventeen years later, when the Cultural Revolution began. The result was that families who, before Communism, had worked hard and intelligently and had prospered suddenly became national enemies. Even those who had chosen not to flee China, out of a strong sense of Chinese patriotism, like the author's parents and grandparents, were declared by the state to be "enemies of the people". Even worse, no way was allowed for such a family to "make up" for its past, and even the children who were born into Communism, like the author and her siblings and friends, were declared to be guilty of the "crimes" of their ancestors. For the author, the Cultural Revolution was a turning point in her life. Until then, her parents and grandmother had kept their heads down and been left alone, but now they were denounced and actively persecuted. What the author was seeing daily in her life conflicted with the propaganda she was getting at school, which, before, she had accepted without question. Now her confusion kept increasing, as she tried to make sense of her new world. Finally, she was told bluntly that she had to choose between her country and her family, and only if she publicly rejected her family could she have the life she had always expected to have. Of course this was an agonizing decision, and took much time, but she finally made her choice. The book is well-written, and does an excellent job of showing life in this tumultuous time as seen by a highly intelligent girl who was only twelve years old when the Cultural Revolution began. I highly recommend it.
