This story starts out on the interesting premise that an American woman has been left an English country estate and all the money necessary to keep it up by an Englishman she has never met, never heard of and knows nothing about. Initially engaged to help her restore the long-neglected gardens and grounds, Dr. Kingston, retired professor of Botany, seems a lot more interested in uncovering the truth of the the woman's connection to the estate's previous owner than she does. At one point, she seems quite annoyed that he continues to delve into the mystery instead of focusing on plant selection, a situation which I found fairly unbelievable.A number of characters some and go throughout the story. Some of them are so sketchily developed that I found myself wondering who they were when they reappeared later on. Several layers of complications develop as the story unfolds, but they all seem to resolve fairly easily. Is this a great mystery? No, but it's moderately entertaining and mildly informative about the effort it takes to recover a garden that's been left to go wild.
This is the second book (The Blue Rose was the first) with Lawrence Kingston as the amateur detective who mixes horticulture with crime solving. In the underbrush, Kingston discovers a ruined chapel complete with a healing well, which turns out to contain human remains. Kingston investigates and a series of dire events--two deaths, a car accident, a rifled flat--keeps the plot moving, but it's the wealth of gardening description and the work trying to bring the neglected garden back to it's former glory that makes this book such an enjoyable read.Elgin has an easy style and he doesn't overwhelm the reader with too much gardening information at the expense of the plot. Kingston is an "older" man with a wealth of life experiences and he makes for an appealing detective. There is a vague hint of possible attraction between him and Jamie, but at least in this book, nothing much comes of it. I'll look forward to reading the next Elgin book with the hope that the widower Kingston and Jamie reconnect.
I have been working my way through Amazon's collection of English cozy mysteries and came across the English Garden Mysteries. I will give you one warning, if you are not a fan of gardens I don't know that you will enjoy these books. Each book in the series involves a garden, plants, and garden tours. Plus the hero of the book was a botany professor and tends to get very pedantic and go on and on about gardens and/or plants at times which is why this got a 4 instead of a 5. On the other hand the mysteries are well written. I love the look at historic homes and gardens that you get in each book, and it is generally a very good way to spend a few hours.
I was disappointed the gardens had nothing to do with the story. A typical mystery... Woman in danger, blah blah blah
Superb story telling. A grand mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat. Filled with English history and botany which was cream on the cake for this reader.
Anxious to read the next story and all the rest. Love the main character. Love all the info on the beautiful gardens.
Really did enjoy this book! I learned a lot about flowers and gardens and the descriptions made me want to take a trip to England. I've ordered two more books by the same author!
The best of the series. Eglin's passion for gardens shows throughout the book and the plot kept me reading until I finished at one sitting.
