Who knew that the west was so dangerous? If someone didn't like you they might just shoot you or worse and sometimes when an unpopular local resident was murdered, the murdered was let off the hook a providing a public service -- this book was an eye-opener to the history of an area I have just relocated to and I enjoyed reading it.
I found this book to be very well written and a pleasure to read. The stories were vivid enough that I was able to picture myself in the surroundings while at the same time learning about life's hazards in early Colorado. Well done.
Covers a lot of topics but there is not much depth of information.

Jolie Gallagher's A WILD WEST HISTORY OF FRONTIER COLORADO traces the beginnings of the 'Centennial State.' Subtitled PIONEERS, GUNSLINGERS & CATTLE KINGS ON THE EASTERN PLAINS, it's a compact tale of of long-ago pioneer life and death.Initially drawn by dreams of gold and ill-informed of the region's unforgiving climate and terrain, countless prospectors, land speculators, settlers and various ne'er-do-wells swarmed into the lands around Pikes Peak and Denver. Towns like Colorado City, Denver City and Pueblo boomed while others busted. Law was non-existent or dispersed at the hand of vigilante mobs. Resident Indian tribes, angered at the loss of their lands, rose up and raids were part of frontier life. The Civil War brought further conflict, this time between pro- and anti-slavery factions. Through it all, individuals like Daniel Oakes, William Larimer, William Byers, Charley Harrison, John Chivington, Ned Wynkoop, William Cody, Tall Bull and Charles Goodnight made Colorado history, both good and bad.Galalgher does a good job of relating Colorado's birth and early development, interweaving the various stories into an enjoyable narrative. Vintage photographs, maps and illustrations help bring that long-ago history to life.I would have given the book five stars but it lacks an index.Wild West fans will enjoy this entertaining and informative recounting of Colorado history. Recommended.
Being a history buff, I enjoyed this book very much. It gives you a real idea of just how wild life was for many people during that time in history. It is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the frontier or anyone who just wants a peek into how the west was won. Great stories told of the Pioneers, Gunslingers and Cattle Kings made this book a Wild Ride through Colorado's Wild West!
Yhis was a wonderful book, full od things I did'nt know. It was also written in a fun and informative that was not boring. Lots of great entertaining stories.
