The History of Kuwait (The Greenwood Histories of the Modern Nations)

Review

"[T]his comprehensive history of Kuwait spans from 3000 BCE, when the first settlers traveled through the northwestern coast of the Persian Gulf, to 2006 CE, when Kuwaiti women first voted in municipal elections. The book contains a thorough depiction of the country's geography and demography, tracing its evolution as a nation through its verious forms under different rulers and occupying countries. It also carefully addresses the current conditions, both social and political, of this small but wealthy country in the modern era, and includes a list of notable Kuwaitis." - Middle East Journal"The History of Kuwait includes information about the land and people, and the history of this area from ca. 3000 BCE, through independence, nationhood, invasion by Iraq in 1990, occupation, and liberation up to present day Kuwait." - Multicultural Review"Writing for students and interested lay people, Casey has penned an accessible analytical history of the Middle Eastern country of Kuwait. The material is structured similarly to other volumes in the Greenwood Histories of Modern Nations series, offering a timeline of historical events, a broadly chronological narrative that describes Kuwait's origins as a desert sheikhdom in the 19th century and its evolution through the present time, biographical information on notable people, a glossary, and a bibliographic essay." - Reference & Research Book News

This is a comprehensive documented history of Kuwait. Its really great if you want to know dates of the first settlers, how people emigrated form Saudi Arabia and the early conflicts of the tribes all the way to the discovery of petrol, how unjust Iraq's claim was over our land, pre-and post invasion days. The development of industry, and the negative effects of excessive subsidizing in the world's foremost welfare state. Yes, that what we are, a WELFARE state. I was disappointed however that the book didnt go into the detail i wanted (ya3ni it generally didnt name names and give the full story of immigration to our country) but it was very informative. oh, and it tells exactly what happened during the invasion, FOCUS ON APRIL GLASPI (US ambassador to Iraq before the invasion) PART ON JULY 25 1990 AND HER COMMENT TO SADDAM HUSSEIN AND YOU WILL SEE SHE SAID: " the US has NO OPINION on the Arab-Arab conflicts like your border disagreement with Kuwait". no opinion??? you swear?? and they invaded us less than a week later! draw your own conclusions! AAAND... unlike our social studies books books, it does give one instance of who killed who to get power. Get it if you are Kuwaiti, you should know this stuff! But dont forget, not all of his facts are set in stone. There was a lot that was missing from this book and i got a definite feeling that Casey was avoiding "controversial topics".
