About the Author
Marc Miller’s career journey included 22 years at IBM, several thriving tech startups, a painful stint as a high school teacher, a gig raising funds for the Jewish Community Association of Austin and a near fatal bicycle accident that changed his perspective forever. Thirty years of wandering the proverbial career desert, often repeating the same mistakes over and over, taught him his most crucial lesson: Most people don’t really know what makes them happy at their core, what fulfills them. They pursue money, status, a skill set, all of which provide some level of satisfaction, but not contentment. They wind up feeling frustrated and trapped. Others have figured out what they need, but don’t know how to chart a course to get there. An active member of the Launch Pad Job Club, Marc found himself counseling friends and associates on their career journeys and finally realized he’d found his vocation. He would use his extensive training experience to help others—especially Baby Boomers—find careers that they could grow into for the decades that lie ahead. Marc is passionate about his work and the clients he serves. He’s taught in more than 35 countries and helped clients from many industries.

This a very short and basic book. With around 130 pages, large font and spacing, you can read it in one sitting in just 2 or 3 hours, seriously. There is nothing groundbreaking here IMO. What interested me the most was the chapter on personality types. It made me engage myself in studying methods like Myers-Briggs and Birkman. Other than that I couldnt extract much useful advice that I already didnt have, and most of the book seemed to be IMO just plain common sense that Im sure you could easily find in any other book or site specialized on career advice/counseling.
The Repurpose Your Career book is a guide for anyone wanting to make an outright change in their career; whether you are in the middle of your career or ready to embark on the second half of your life. Each of the chapters in the book focuses on a topic for you to consider during your career change process and include questions at the end of the chapter for the reader to reflect on and write down their thoughts. By putting your thoughts on paper for topics such as the type of managerial style you prefer, how to network strategically, and the type of work environment you need, all help you layout the plan for you to find your next job. More importantly while doing this self-reflection process, you can help identify what you don’t want to do or like to do or think you “should do†when your heart is telling you otherwise. All that information needs to go into your plan too. When you actually start looking for a job and doing the interviews, you can rely on your plan as a guide to help you keep you on track. So, I ask you what are you waiting for? Now is the time to make that career change and Repurpose Your Career will help you get started on the right path.
Marc Miller’s book, Repurpose Your Career, A Practical Guide to the 2nd half of Life has helped me tremendously with my personal career transition. The invaluable knowledge imparted from this book is applicable not only for the baby boomer generation, but also for young career driven professionals like myself (specifically, young people in their 30s, who are looking to pivot their careers). When Marc’s book was published, I jumped at the chance to utilize its wisdom to power my successful career transition! Marc recommends that you read the book based on the topics that you need to focus on most - which makes complete sense for busy professionals. I, however, chose to read the book from cover to cover and found certain insights to be most helpful for my personal career journey. Marc is absolutely right in stating that “social and professional networks are the most important piece of any career change†(8). The connections to folks that are outside your immediate friend and family group are the best resources when making your Career Pivot! I successfully found at least 3 professional jobs through friend-of-a-friend connections, and each of these jobs have brought great value to my resume and current skill-set. Networking can be a deciding factor in your career transition, and Marc stresses the need to build a tribe of supportive individuals... Cultivating a network of professional friends, supportive family, and esteemed mentors will see you soundly through your Career Pivot. Several pearls of wisdom that I found helpful include knowing yourself, knowing your skill-set, and knowing your financial and personal resources will greatly improve your process of career change. Marc stresses the need to eliminate negative self-talk (or being your own worst critic) through naming your negative judges.. My favorite Chapter of this book is entitled Career Mistakes: Failure Is A Great Option. I have found that failing at certain jobs on my career path to be some of my most rewarding learning experiences. Marc reaffirms this notion on page 53, “if you’re like most people, failure is sometimes not only a option, but it’s inevitable.. It’s essential. You don’t learn unless you fail.†Marc encourages his readers to recognize when you can take “survival jobs†to assist in your Career Pivot, but stresses that failing fast is the best way to experience failure. Failure is inevitable in life, and the ability to cope with and learn from failure is one of the best skills an individual can develop. The encouragement, recognition, and realistic advice Marc offers in this book makes it a necessary read for anyone looking to pivot their career. I highly recommend this book to everyone who yearns to find a stable and fulfilling career. From networking to knowing what skills you can offer, Marc successfully assists the reader in navigating the choppy seas of Career Pivoting in this actionable guide.
My father left the Navy after WWII and worked for one company for the remainder of his career. Forty three years with the same employer. No more. Most people will have multiple employers and, increasingly, multiple careers. I myself have had four different careers over the span of my working life of a little over 40 years. Marc Miller has written a practical and highly useful guide to help people of all ages think through the process of making one of life's most important, and potentially frightening, changes, pivoting to a new career. This book will be especially useful to people in middle age or those approaching "retirement" who want to continue to contribute but don't want to continue doing what they have always done. The exercises and advice are drawn from years of experience and are both practical and effective. If you are considering a new chapter in your working life, this book is a great place to start.
This should be required reading for anyone in career-search mode. It is the new industry standard as was "What Color is Your Parachute?" The only career repurposing tool better than using this book is using this book while working with the author. I have worked with and known Marc Miller for over 5 years and as a boomer, using Marc's method has been an invaluable tool for defining the next stage in my career. I wish I had known sooner some of the things I learned about myself using the tools in this book. The methods for self discovery and career identification are clearly outlined and the exercises produce results. I am an engineer and MBA by training and a salesperon by trade and personality. This book gives many examples and provides relatable stories the reader can learn from. Money well-spent!
If you're like me and have done the same thing for many years and earn to make a change but don't know where to start, this is the book for you. Its easy read this exercises that make you think about you have made decisions that got you to this place today. Marc had great examples of how people made life changing moves, the challenges, how the overcome them and what you need to be prepared for in you next adventure.
