The Magic Words is a book of lists -- of lists within lists. It's list inception (listception?).While the book covers a broad range of topics like Point of View, Narrative Voice, Plotting and Prose, much of it reads like a very general, surface-level overview. Though examples are few in number, the book offers myriad exercises for writers who are either in the process of creating a novel or who have a completed manuscript that needs editing.Tackling a more modern topic, the author discusses the need for more diverse books, written about diverse characters, crafted by diverse authors. Helpful tips are provided on researching culture, avoiding tropes, and steering clear of cultural appropriation.Unfortunately, a fair amount of the material in The Magic Words was taken from the author's previous book, Second Sight: An Editor's Talks on Writing, Revising, and Publishing Books for Children and Young Adults. On one hand, it was good to review the material. On the other, it was disappointing to have paid -- twice -- for the same material.The Magic Words: Writing Great Books for Children and Young Adults provides a general overview of basic writing and editing tips, and the author demonstrates a thorough understanding of how books impact young readers:"Through the invocation of the right words in the right order -- the magic words -- books can change lives. And that is never more true than in childhood and young adulthood, when books introduce their readers to worlds both fantastical and right next door, inhabited by characters who share their challenges and joys."
The Magic Words is truly a master class in writing, a resource not just for writers of children and young adult stories, but also for any writer who wants insight and practice in all aspects of the writing craft. In The Magic Words, Cheryl Klein takes readers through all of the major aspects of craft: story concepts, themes, characters, building character-reader bonds, plot, scene, pace, voice, first chapters, polishing, revision techniques, etc. She offers a plethora of exercises for writers at all stages of the writing process—from creating a book map to help you analyze your own writing as a whole, to brainstorming on “what makes you weird†to find the subject matter for your next project. Cheryl Klein also reveals much of her own process as an editor. It was truly eye opening to see how much thought and care she puts into every aspect of the novels that she edits.Yes, I'll admit that I finished the book utterly sapped of energy and convinced that I was a complete fraud as a writer...But then I went right back into the first chapters about brainstorming and building a story out of a character, situation, world, theme--and promptly found the inspiration for an entire world filled with complex characters, along with the creative exercises and process for turning that world into a well-crafted novel.The Magic Words is a resources that I will return to again and again throughout my writing career.
If you've ever built anything or repaired anything, you know how big a difference having just the right tool makes. In this book, an accomplished editor, Cheryl Klein, unlocks and provides, complete with exercises, her professional tool kit for analyzing and improving fiction. With dozens of techniques covering things like pacing, theme, structure, etc and plentiful actual examples, she takes the reader inside an editor's mind. I've been writing and reading books about writing for over 20 years. I've never run across anything as pragmatic and helpful to the writer as this. But be forewarned, the depth of analysis can be intimidating. If you try to create with all of these ideas in the forefront of your mind, you might be inclined to panic. Don't. Instead, treat this book like an essential toolkit. Create your story or novel idea or draft with your critical self turned off, then pull the Magic Words down from your bookshelf and use the wisdom in it to begin editing and to what you've done to the highest level you can. You won't regret it.
I have published one book of non fiction for kids and I am working on two new fiction books. This is a fabulous resource with great exercises and insights for kidlit fiction writers like me. Klein has thought of everything from every angle, and communicates it succinctly with humor and grace. Many of the exercises she offers to help a writer create a compelling and enjoyable MG or YA book can also be used by writers of adult fiction. Kudos to Cheryl Klein!
I've been writing for enough years to have learned more than the basics from conferences, workshops, excellent critique groups and a bookshelf struggling to contain the books on writing I haven't given away. I'm about halfway through Cheryl's new book (I'm savoring it) and it is by far the most useful book I've read on writing. Her advice is straight forward, written with wit and easily digested. It's deepened my understanding of what makes good story and every section offers enticing exercises to apply what's been learned. It's a book I'll keep on my shelf to reread and reread.
If you write, or want to write, for children or young adults, you must own this book. Just as I did with Cheryl's previous book, Second Sight, I read The Magic Words slowly, chapter by delicious chapter, pen in hand to underline crucial passages, a highlighter nearby to highlight web-links. There is so much meat here and so much to go back to when the need arises. It is a master class in what makes a book work and work well. Written with humor and a deep knowledge of the publishing industry, Cheryl Klein presents the steps to follow, the work to do, and redo, in order to make your work shine.
Detailed with many examples and exercises, Klein's book about writing for children and young adults would be excellent as a text in a writing class for beginning writers. For advanced writers who are already familiar with the basics of writing, this might be a bit too basic.
